Level 2 Lesson Plan: Why Forgive?

Note to parent or teacher: This is a 40-minute lesson plan that highlights the following lesson objective: “Be able to identify the benefits of forgiveness to both the forgiver and the one forgiven, and how the person who forgives is the one who benefits the most; learn of the detrimental effects on one’s life when forgiveness is not practiced, and how when practiced, it is an important step in overcoming resentment or bitterness.” (Character Building: Social Skills: Forgiveness-2a)

Watch Matthew West’s song: “Forgiveness.”

Ask your child how difficult it is for them to forgive someone, and if they have found it more difficult to forgive some than others. Talk about why this may be.

If your child has had a recent experience with the need to forgive, perhaps you can use this time to discuss the situation and gain an understanding of how your child feels about letting go and forgiving the person who has wronged them. Do they feel ready? If not, what do they feel is missing?

ReadWhy Forgive?

Go over the three points addressed in “Why Forgive?” and ask your child how they can apply either one or each one to a current situation they may be going through that involves needing to forgive someone who has wronged them. The three points to cover are:

  • Forgiveness puts your heart right with God (page 2).
  • Forgiveness heals you (page 3).
  • Forgiveness changes lives for the better (page 5).

They may not have an example of how the current situation has changed a life for the better, but they could imagine how it could. Or together you could think back on another time when forgiveness did make someone’s life better—either your child’s, yours, or the one who needed to be forgiven.

Ask your child, What if the roles were reversed? What if your child needed someone’s forgiveness? What if they have apologized but the person they have wronged doesn’t want to forgive them?

ReadThe Thing about Apologies.” 

Discuss with your child how they felt their apology went. Or if they haven’t yet apologized, after reading this, how do they feel would be the best way to apologize? The story covered three key ingredients (page 4):

  • Regret
  • Responsibility
  • Remedy

See if your child can remember what each one of these means, and if not, go back and read the first part of page four. Go over these key ingredients again and see how they can become a part of the apology that is needed, or if a remedy is needed, together figure out what can be done.

Remind your child that even if the person they have wronged doesn’t forgive them right away, if their heart is in the right place, then they can depend on God’s forgiveness, because God always forgives.

Level 2 Lesson Plan: The City of Nineveh

Note to the parent or teacher: Here is a 30- to 45-minute lesson plan to fill out the class “Cities of the Bible: The City of Nineveh,” that covers the lesson objectives: “Learn of more of the lives of the great men and women of the Bible” (Christian Life and Faith: Witnessing and Missionary Training: Great Men and Women of God-2a); and “Be able to describe what it means to be judgmental, and the negative effects of such an attitude; identify ways to show compassion rather than passing judgment.” (Character Building: Social Skills: Compassion-2b).

ReadCities of the Bible: The City of Nineveh.”

REVIEW PARAGRAPH 1:

Read Genesis 10:1–11 and help the children find the answer to these questions:

  • Was Nineveh built before or after the flood in Noah’s lifetime? (Answer: After.)
  • Besides being the founder of Nineveh, what else was Nimrod known for? (Answer: Being a great hunter.)
  • What was the ancient name of the region where Nineveh was built? (Answer: Assyria.)

Read 2 Kings 19:31–36 and Isaiah 37:33–37 (For those interested, here is the fuller story in Isaiah 37:10–37.)

  • The historical context

REVIEW PARAGRAPH 2:

Read Jonah, chapters 1–4 or a shorter version in a children’s Bible.

Reflect with the children about how it must have been for Jonah. The people of Nineveh were known for being cruel and evil, even posing a threat to the people of Israel. Maybe that’s why he didn’t want to warn them. When he finally did, thinking they would be judged, he was disappointed when they repented and were shown mercy.

Ask the children if they have ever been upset at another child who has been unkind to them, and maybe even thought it was unfair when the other child received attention from other friends, family, or teachers rather than consequences. Talk about how in such situations, even if it’s difficult to show the same mercy God shows, we can look to Jesus for help to do so.

Reflect with the children on how the people of Nineveh did not know how to live right (Jonah 4:11). Then talk about how helpful it is for us to have the examples in the Bible, especially in Jesus’ life, of how to live in a compassionate and caring manner.

REVIEW PARAGRAPH 3:

Read Matthew 12:38–41.

Ask the children what similarities there were between Jonah’s and Jesus’ messages to the people, and how these messages helped to change them.

REVIEW PARAGRAPH 4:

Find on a map the city of Mosul, where remnants of old Nineveh can be seen today.

Level 2 Lesson Plan: The Village of Emmaus

Note to the parent or teacher: Here is a 30- to 45-minute lesson plan to fill out the class “Cities of the Bible: The Village of Emmaus,” that covers the lesson objective, “Learn of the historical backings to the life of Jesus, His death on the cross, and His resurrection.” (Christian Life and Faith: Biblical and Christian Foundation: Jesus, God’s Son-2a)

ReadCities of the Bible: The Village of Emmaus.”

Check out the possible location of the village of Emmaus on a map. The village no longer exits, but some believe it might have been located where it is shown on this map.

Look up Luke 24:13–35.

Read Luke 24, verses 13–16.

Ask your child for ideas of why these two disciples didn’t recognize Jesus at first. Some possibilities could be:

•    They knew He had died, so it didn’t occur to them that this could actually be Jesus, Himself.
•    They were not among His closest 12 disciples and perhaps didn’t see Him up close or long enough to remember how He looked.
•    In those days, there was no video or even photographs to help become familiar with how someone looked.

Read Luke 24, verses 17–24.

Imagine with your child the pain and disappointment Jesus’ followers must have experienced when He died, and how their hopes had been dashed for the country of Israel to be restored by Jesus. Then imagine with your child the added confusion His disciples might have experienced when His body had disappeared, thinking it might have been stolen.

Read Luke 24, verses 25–27.

Follow up by reading Messianic Prophecies and Their Fulfillment, Part 1,” and “Messianic Prophecies and Their Fulfillment, Part 2.”

Read Luke 24, verses 28–35.

Imagine with your child the disciples’ surprise and joy as they suddenly recognized Jesus when He blessed and broke the bread.

View Road to Emmaus.”

Reflect how God can use a small village for such a wonderful story. He can do mighty things with each of us, no matter how insignificant we might feel at times.

0–5 Lesson Plan: God’s Gifts of Salvation and Forgiveness

Note to parent or teacher: Here is a 40-minute 0–5 lesson plan on the gift of salvation and the forgiveness that Jesus gives those who ask Him for it.

Read God’s Great Love for Us.”

Talk about things that can be done every day to be a good reflection of Jesus. Ask the children whether it is always easy to do what is right or good, and why one might choose to do something that is wrong, unkind, or hurtful. Explain how Jesus wants to help His children choose to do what is right, and that help is available through prayer.

Read Salvation Is Forever.”

Explain how even though someone may do wrong at times, if he or she comes to Jesus with a sorry heart and asks Jesus for His forgiveness, He is eager to help. Ask the children if there are any things that they could use Jesus’ forgiveness for, then take a few minutes to pray and ask Jesus for His forgiveness and His help to do better next time.

REVIEW PARAGRAPH 1:
Read
Genesis 37:13–17.

Locate the city of Dothan on a map of Old Testament Israel.

REVIEW PARAGRAPH 2:
Read
Genesis 37:3–11.

Discuss together what the causes might have been for Joseph’s brothers being jealous of him.

Discuss together what Joseph could have done differently concerning the dreams he had.

Explore what steps the brothers might have taken to overcome their understandable jealousy in this difficult situation:

  • They could have ignored Joseph when he began to boast.
  • They might have talked with their father directly about why they felt jealous, telling him how they felt he loved the youngest sons more than them.
  • They might have also told their father how they were hurt by Joseph boasting.
  • It’s possible they took these steps but their father wasn’t able to stop Joseph from bragging. If so, the brothers could have focused more on being thankful for good things in their personal lives and not as much on these difficult issues. Though this would not have solved the problem, it would have made it easier to bear.

Read Genesis 37:12–36.

Point out how originally the brothers had not planned to sell Joseph, and how the oldest brother, Reuben, protected Joseph by having him put in the pit instead of being killed as the others were planning to do.

Discuss how due to the brothers not having dealt with their jealousy of Joseph, they now acted out on it. Explain why it’s important to talk about negative experiences or conflicts with a parent, counselor, or teacher who can help to work out a solution or even just to express a conflict with a responsible individual who can help one navigate difficult situations and emotions. By talking with someone responsible, it allows one to get input on possible steps to take to rectify the situation or look for ways to deal with hurt or misunderstanding.

REVIEW PARAGRAPH 3:

Read 2 Kings 6:8–23 or “Elisha’s Secret Army.”

Recall together the following points from the story:

  • three miraculous occurrences,
  • one act of mercy,
  • the conclusion.

Talk about God’s mighty power that is available for us to call on for help, and how even if we don’t see specifics that show us it is God’s intervention, we know that He’s at work giving us the assistance we need, just as He was there for Elisha and the people of Dothan.

Talk about the power of the mercy shown to the members of the Syrian army.

Level 2 Lesson Plan: The City of Jericho

REVIEW PARAGRAPH 1:
Read
Joshua 2 and Joshua 6:1–5.

Ask the children what examples of faith-filled courage they see in these two passages. (For example, Rahab’s courage to hide the spies; later Rahab’s courage to hang the red rope in her window; the priests marching around Jericho with the trumpets.)

REVIEW PARAGRAPH 2:
Read
Luke 19:1–10 and “October Hero of the Month: Zacchaeus.”

Explore with the children why people considered Zacchaeus to be a sinner.

  • You could have them imagine that an invading foreign government was ruling the country where you live and expecting people to pay taxes to the invading country.
  • Explain that Zacchaeus was collecting taxes for a foreign government, Rome, that had invaded their land, and how he likely also overcharged people in order to enrich himself.
  • Now have the children reflect on how surprising it would be for those citizens to see Jesus going to dinner with such a person.
  • Finally, have the children consider how they would feel if they were Zacchaeus and had been shown such love. Read verse 8 again to see what Zacchaeus promised to do to make amends.

REVIEW PARAGRAPH 3:
Listen to “An Audio Bible Adventure: A New Leader and His Undercover Agents.”

Read Hebrews 11:30–31 and ask the children to explain in their own words why Rahab was included in this chapter as a woman of faith.

Read Matthew 1:5–6.

CONCLUSION:
Talk about what these two Bible characters from Jericho (Rahab and Zacchaeus) had in common. (Both were likely looked down on by others for their sins; both received mercy for themselves and their families; both put love into action.)

0–5 Lesson Plan: A Heart Filled with Joy

Note to parent or teacher: Here is a 30-minute 0–5 lesson plan on the importance of gratitude and ways to demonstrate thankfulness to God and others.

Think of one thing that happened to you recently that might not have been what you hoped for, but that turned out all right in the end. Discuss how looking for the good in a situation can make it easier to be happy when things don’t go as you wished or planned. 

Read My Little Talks with Jesus: Look on the Bright Side.”

Memorize this little rhyme:

“I’ll look on the bright side when things make me sad.

Soon I’ll find plenty of reasons to be glad!”1

The next time you’re feeling down because something isn’t going your way, remember this little rhyme, and take a few minutes to find something to be joyful about.

ReadThrough Ups and Downs.

Take a moment to pray, and ask Jesus to help you be positive and grateful throughout your day, especially when things don’t go as you planned.

Watch Sing a Song of Joy.”

Talk about how one way to find joy is by looking for ways to make others happy. Then brainstorm little acts of kindness to make others happy.

UseHave Fun with Gratitude” to think of three things you are grateful for and draw them in the little boxes. Post the picture by your bed so you can be reminded of these things at the start and end of each day.

Level 1 Lesson Plan: Our Loving Protector

Here is a 45-minute lesson plan, divided into two halves, that highlights the lesson objective of learning about God’s power to protect (Christian Life and Faith: Biblical and Christian Foundation: God-1a).

The class is designed so it can be divided into two sessions if you like.

First half:

Read Standing on God’s Word: He Watches over Us.”

Look up Psalm 3:5 for another Bible promise about a good night’s rest.

Read Standing on God’s Word: Angelic Protection.”

Listen to the audio “Fear Thou Not.”

Read Standing on God’s Word: Peace in a Storm.”

Listen to the audio “God Is Our Refuge.”

Review the verses from “Crazily Cool Cards Set: Fear Not.” You can also print these out for your child to color.

Second half:

Read Standing on God’s Word: Saving Power.”

Follow this up by reading:

ReadPrayer Results” and “Power to Help.”

Listen to the audio “Therefore Will I Deliver Him.”

Read Standing on God’s Word: Safekeeping. Then with your child, discover and discuss the similarities between the verse from this class, Psalm 34:7, and the verse in the “Saving Power” class, Psalm 91:14. (Hint: Reverencing / loving the Lord.)

Conclude by talking about the times Jesus has protected you and your child, both the obvious times of intervention and the unseen times. Then take some time to thank Jesus for His wonderful care!

Listen to I Will Bless the Lord at All Times.” Look up Psalm 34 (KJV) and sing along.

Level 2 Lesson Plan: Dealing with Dragons

Here is a 30-minute lesson plan that highlights the following lesson objective: “Understand that courage enables us to face the daily challenges that are known to us, as well as the unknown fears that we have yet to encounter,” and “Learn to recognize and practice courage in everyday situations, and understand that it is a skill that can be developed, which will allow one to face situations that previously had been thought too difficult.” (Character Building: Values and Virtues: Courage-2d,e)

Listen to What Time I Am Afraid.” While listening to the song, have your children reflect on the picture that accompanies this song.

ReadDealing with Dragons.

Discuss with your children some of the feelings they deal with that prevent them from facing bigger or harder challenges. For example:

  • they may feel they will fail at something,
  • they are unsure of where to begin,
  • they don’t understand everything completely and so they prefer not to begin,
  • they fear people will belittle them if they do something wrong.      

Whatever fear they may have, discuss ways or a step they can take toward overcoming or facing their fear. Remind them that sometimes courage grows slowly as they take steps to achieve whatever task they set out to do. With each step they receive more courage and confidence. Also discuss how to call on God’s help or use His help in whatever situation you are discussing.

ReadFeeling Shy?

Discuss with your children how the girl in the story faced her fear when she talked to the new girl, discovering that they had a lot in common and became best friends. Talk about what would have happened if she hadn’t talked with her. Also discuss how scary it seemed to Moses to face Pharaoh, as God commanded, telling him to let the Hebrew people go free. It must have seemed daunting at first, and Moses probably had a lot of questions, but he took the first step and traveled to Egypt, and everything fell into place as he followed the steps God showed him to take.

Talk about this line from “Feeling Shy”: “The more you face your fear, the easier it gets.” Talk about how this applies to your children and the challenges they regularly face. If you think of examples from your own life, share those as well.

Listen to God Is Our Refuge.

0-5 Lesson Plan: Everyday Gifts

Note to parent or teacher: Here is a 30- to 40-minute 0–5 lesson plan on everyday blessings (e.g., God’s love, friendship, family) that fill up one’s day, and how to appreciate and be grateful for those gifts.

Read Everyday Gifts.”

Write a list of some of the everyday gifts, like those listed in the article, which you might experience. Discuss how even though those gifts might seem ordinary, they can bring joy to your day. Put this list up somewhere you can see it to remind you of some of the gifts that you are blessed with.

ReadThe Blessing of Family and Friends.”

Ask each child to name something special about a person in their family, and how that special something makes you or others happy. For example, “My sister Alice is fun to play with. She makes our games exciting,” or “Grandma is caring and thoughtful. She makes me feel loved.”

Read Building Friendships” and “One Kind Deed at a Time: Build a Better Friendship.”

Discuss how friendship is another everyday gift that can be given and received. Talk about some of the things that make a friendship special, and how to give the gift of friendship to someone.

ReadJesus Is with You!” and “Jesus, Friend of Little Children.”

Talk about how the best gift you can have is Jesus. Jesus will always be there to guide, love, help, and be your friend, no matter what.

Color one or more of the following coloring pages, and listen to the audio “Me and You.”

Take time with the children to imagine yourselves being these followers who encountered Jesus and who thought they would never hear Jesus teach again after He died. Reflect on how exciting it must have been to discover Jesus was alive and to have been taught once again by Him!

Assemble the “3D Picture: Meals with Jesus: The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus,” and/or coloring “Coloring Page: Meals with Jesus: The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus.”
