Note to parent or teacher: Here’s a 20-minute lesson plan on character traits that enhance study skills. It highlights the following lesson objective: “Learn various skills associated with successful learning.” (Character Building: Personal Responsibility: Learning and Study Skills 2b)
Have your child brainstorm all the character traits he/she thinks contribute toward being a successful student. Make a list. Next, read “Character Traits of Super Students.” See how many traits your child listed were in the article you just read.
Talk about your child’s studies. Start with highlighting the subjects that your child enjoys studying; talk about the subjects he’s mastered and the character traits that have helped him to learn and master those subjects. Briefly discuss subjects that your child may have more difficulty with. Ask your child to think of any character traits from the article that will help him in mastering any subjects he may be having difficulty in.
Read “The Value of Making Mistakes.” What character trait or lesson did the boy learn that can also help your child in his/her studies?
Have your child write out Philippians 4:13 on a small piece of cardstock to use as a bookmark in a study book. Encourage the ones so inclined to decorate their bookmark.
Activity: Pick five traits that were listed in “Character Traits of Super Students,” and focus on using one trait per school day during his next week of school. You can have him write out the days of the week along with the traits he’ll be focusing on each day on a piece of paper.
Lastly, don’t forget that success in school and in many other areas of life doesn’t happen instantly! Read “Bite-Sized Goals” for a reminder of the importance of patience and perseverance in reaching your goals.
Prayer: Have the children thank Jesus for a scholastic subject they enjoy, and then also ask Him for help for a subject that they would like extra help with.
