Note to parent or teacher: Here’s a 30- to 40-minute lesson plan that covers John the Baptist and the baptism of Jesus. Some of the accompanying activities could be done along with this lesson plan or at another time, depending on how much time you have to complete this lesson. The references for the listed Bible stories can be read from a Bible or the story found in a children’s illustrated Bible, depending on the comprehension level of your children. (Christian Life and Faith: Biblical and Christian Foundation: Jesus, God’s Son-1c)
Read Luke 1:5–24 and 57–80 about the birth of John the Baptist.
Discuss why it was difficult for Zacharias to believe what God had told him. Then discuss how it takes faith to believe that God will fulfill His promises.
Read “When Jesus Was Baptized.”
Read Mark 1:1–11.
Watch “John the Baptist”; and/or “Jesus, John the Baptist, and Baptism.”
Read Malachi 3:1; relate to the child that this was a fulfilled prophecy about a forerunner (John the Baptist) being sent to prepare the way for the Messiah (Jesus).
Discuss how God had a plan for both Jesus and John the Baptist before they were even born. God has a plan for each of us too. Just like each personality is unique, each plan He has for our individual lives is unique as well.
