Note to parent or teacher: Here is a 30- to 40-minute lesson plan on the following lesson objectives: “Respect and treasure God’s Word, and understand the importance of keeping and obeying God’s Word; study and memorize Bible verses upon which these principles are based.” (Christian Life and Faith: Biblical and Christian Foundation: God’s Word-1b)
Listen to the song “Building on the Rock.”
Read John 1:1–5, 9–14, and “Jesus, the Expression of God’s Love.” Explain to the children that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the personification of God’s Word. Explain that throughout Jesus’ life on earth, He put God’s Word into action through the things that He said and did.
Read “Spend Time with Jesus.” Ask the children what ways they have spent time with Jesus over the past few days. They can compare what they have done with the list on the first page of the article they just read. You can also tell them ways you’ve spent time with Jesus recently.
Memorize “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1 KJV). (See also “Crazily Cool Card Set: God’s Word.”)
Read Matthew 7:24–27 or Luke 6:47–49. Talk about how Jesus used these examples to teach about the importance of building our lives on obedience to God’s Word. Bring out how the little decisions we make each day play a part in how we build the house of our lives.
You could possibly use an example of “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right” (Ephesians 6:1 KJV), and the importance of following your instructions.
Or, for another example, you could talk about how being kind to others and forgiving others helps one to enjoy life and others, and that this is obeying what the Bible tells us when it says: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32 ESV).
Ask the children to think of ways they can build their lives on lessons they’ve learned from recent Bible stories they’ve read.
Watch “The Parables of Jesus: The Two Builders.”
Have fun and see if you can find the secret message in “Bible Space Trek: Two Builders.” (To check your answer, see “Answer Key for ‘Bible Space Trek: Two Builders.’”)
Read “The Word Is Me” and pause at the end of each page to talk about examples in your own lives of how the Word has helped you in relation to what is explained on the page.
Read “The Protective Tower” and talk about the importance of obeying God’s Word, that by doing so we avail ourselves of God’s protection. Remind the children that even when things go wrong, God is able to take better care of us when we have been staying close to Him through obedience.
Read “Dora and the Garden.”
