Here is a 15-minute lesson plan on building our lives on God’s Word.
Sing and do the actions for “The Wise Man Built His House upon a Rock.”
Read the story from your child’s favorite Bible storybook or retell it in your own words using flannelgraph, chalk-talk (illustrating on blackboard or whiteboard), etc.
Discuss and ask your children the following:
- What is the most important part of a house? (The foundation. Castles, houses, towers all have a foundation.)
- What is a foundation made of? (Rock, cement, steel rods, concrete, etc. Strong materials. Every house is different, but all foundations are made of strong materials.)
- In this story Jesus was talking about how your life is like a house. Everyone has a different house because everyone leads a different life. But every person needs a good foundation made of strong materials.
- The foundation of a house may be easy for us to find, but where is your foundation? (Mind, heart, soul.)
- What is your foundation? (Jesus; God’s Word.)
- How can you build a strong foundation? (Through what you read, watch, and study.)
- For example, what do you learn at school? (English and arithmetic are good foundations for things you will need to do in the future. In the same way, God’s Word is important to study in order to build a good foundation for your life.)
- How do you study God’s Word? (Through reading the Bible.)
- Where can you find God’s Word? (In various children’s Bibles and other devotional books.)
- What is another way to learn God’s Word and build a good foundation? (Through learning and memorizing verses, and through the guidance of parents and those knowledgeable in God’s Word, you will have a strong foundation like Jesus was talking about in this story.)
- While each of our houses may look different, as people have different interests and skills, we can each build a strong foundation on God’s Word.
