Note to parent or teacher: Here’s a 20- to 30-minute class plan on being a help to others.
Watch “Happy Helper.”
Read “Bright Pebbles: Lend a Hand.” Recall some way that your child has helped you in the recent past, and tell him/her a specific reason for how happy that made you.
Read “Bright Pebbles: Caring for Things Big and Small.”
Talk about the chores that you (the parent) do around the house to keep it clean and tidy. If your child doesn’t have any chores, take a few moments to talk about what chores he/she can take on. Print out “My Weekly Chore Chart” as a way to help keep track of your child’s chores. Decide on a reward if your child does his/her chores diligently and cheerfully for one week. You could also hint at, and plan for, an extra reward if the child doesn’t need to be reminded.
Watch the video “Helpful Habits.”
Discuss how, at first, it’s difficult to learn new habits—like remembering to do your chores or being cheerful when asked to help. But after a while you will be remembering more often, and forgetting less often. Compare this with another habit that your child has successfully learned.
Memorize the verse Galatians 6:2.
