After the death of Jesus, there was a man from Arimathea named Joseph who asked Pilate, the Roman governor, for permission to bury the body of Jesus.
Luke 23:50–53; John 19:38–42
Jesus Is Buried
It was the day before the Sabbath when Joseph of Arimathea laid Jesus’ body in a new tomb carved within a big rock.
Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, who were friends of Jesus, went with Joseph to the tomb.
A big stone was placed in front of the tomb to close it. Afterwards, everyone returned to their homes because it was time to prepare for the Sabbath.
Some of the priests feared that Jesus’ disciples would try to take His body and claim that He was resurrected, so they asked Pilate to place guards in front of the tomb.
Matthew 27:62–66.
The Resurrection
The day after the Sabbath, the women visited the tomb. Upon arriving, they saw that the big stone had been rolled away and someone was standing there. It was an angel! The angel told them, “Don’t be afraid. Jesus is not here; He is risen!”
Luke 24:1–8; Matthew 28:1–7; Mark 16:1–7.
Mary Magdalene waited at the tomb because she was worried. A man there asked her, “Why are you crying?” She thought he was a gardener and asked him, “Where did you put His body?” The man answered, “Mary!” It was Jesus! Mary was so happy.
The women then told the disciples the good news of Jesus’ resurrection! They also told the disciples that Jesus would be coming to see them.
For the full story, see John 20:11–18.
Later, Jesus appeared to his disciples. They were very happy to see Him and to know that He is alive! He lives again!
