Based on John 13:4–17.
On the day before the Passover Festival, during His last days on earth, after sharing a meal with His disciples, Jesus rose from the table, took off His outer layer of clothing, and tied a towel around His waist. He then poured some water into a washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel from around His waist.
When it was Simon Peter’s turn to have his feet washed, he was very embarrassed and said to Jesus, “Lord, surely you aren’t going to wash my feet!” But Jesus told him it was very important for Him to do so.
When Jesus had finished, He told His disciples, “Since I, your Lord and teacher, have just washed your feet, then you should wash each other’s feet. I have set an example for you. Now that you know this truth, you will find happiness by serving one another with humility.”
