With all the excitement of Christmas, it is important not to forget the true meaning of Christmas and what it is we are celebrating. There is much more to Christmas than the trees, decorations, presents, treats, and parties that we enjoy at this time of year. Christmas is when we celebrate the day that God showed His love for us in the form of a tiny baby. Christmas is a time when we can rejoice that “God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”1
Even though not many people knew of Jesus’ birth, the night He was born a brilliant light burst from the starry sky. A host of angels filled the night with their heavenly song: “Praise God in heaven! Peace on earth to everyone who pleases God.”2
The decorations, the trees, the get-togethers, and the gifts are fun and love-filled ways that we celebrate this wondrous event! Let’s always remember who and what we are celebrating—Jesus’ birth and God’s love for us.
When you say your prayers at night, pray not only for a fun-filled Christmas, but also get excited about Jesus and God’s great love for you. Then thank God for a chance to celebrate this special time of year, and show that gratitude by looking for ways to give a little bit of God’s love to others too.
The gifts we give Jesus at Christmas are gifts from the heart—gifts of kindness, thoughtfulness, gratitude, hope, and love. Look for ways to give those gifts to Jesus, and in doing so, you’ll be remembering what Christmas is all about!
What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part.
Yet what can I give Him?
Give my heart.
—Christina Rossetti (1830–1894) from “A Christmas Carol”
